In 1844, the peace of Feudal Japan is threatened by cruel Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira, who is politically rising and getting closer to his half-brother, the shogun. After the harakiri of the Namiya clan leader, samurai Shinzaemon Shimada is summoned by the shogun's advisor Sir Doi of the Akashi Clan to listen to the tragedy of Makino Uneme, whose son and daughter-in-law have been murdered by Naritsugu. Then Sir Doi shows a woman with arms, legs and tongue severed by Naritsugu and she writes with her forearm a request to Shinza to slaughter Naritsugu and his samurai. Shinza promises to kill Naritsugu and he gathers eleven other samurais and plots a plan to attack Naritsugu in his trip back to the Akashi land. But the cunning samurai Hanbei Kitou that is responsible for the security of his master foresees Shinza's intent. Shinza decides to go with his samurai through the mountain, where they find the hunter Koyata that guides them off the mountain and joins the group. Now the thirteen men...

Beggar in the Heights - Album Launch

Beggar in the Heights was formed in February 2018, after a collection of chance meetings and long conversations. They are a group of Glasgow Based musicians exploring the fringes of what they know, kind of, treading the line of what they can do, always.
Coming from a week long residency in London at the tail end of last year, where They recorded their debut album; Good Health. We are very excited to announce its release along with a launch Gig at the Flying Duck, with the support of guitarist Michiel Turner and pianist / composer Stefan Janik.

Brian Cunningham Album Release

Come join me and my chums for a night of good original music as I finally release my album to the universe. I'll be sharing the stage with some good friends, forming a band I want to call "the Dreamboats". Trust me, I wanted to call the event "Brian Cunningham and the Dreamboats" but it was agreed that it may be a little confusing. I've settled for "Brian, Mark, Chris and Scott share the stage just after Cat Caldwell and Neon Suicide tear the house down".

It isn't very snappy. But it's only a fiver, or £3 if you have your student ID. I'll also have limited edition* CDs for sale on the night!

The album will be previewed at 10pm right after our set and will go live at midnight... whatever that means.

Come down and say bye before I disappear down under for a wee while!

B xxx

*in that they are CDs and I probably won't get more pressed. So, on paper, "Limited Edition" is factually correct. There's no bonus features or anything, apart from being able to place a beer on it, or give it to your grandmother on her birthday... to place her beer on it. Either way, there's only about 50 of them and if you fancy buying one it'll cost you £5.

Documentary Film Showing: Community Doctors

Join us for this inspiring documentary about the largest and “most advanced” medical school in the world, the Latin American School of Medicine, known as ELAM, in Havana, Cuba.

Since its first class of graduates in 2005, over 28,500 people from 103 countries have studied and graduated from ELAM, completely free of charge. Most graduates are from low income communities in Africa, Asia, and the Americas, including the US, and around half of all graduates are women. ELAM graduates go on to serve some of the poorest and most remote communities in the world. Socialist Cuba practices this healthcare internationalism despite the brutal US blockade which denies basic medicines to the Cuban people.

This year ELAM celebrates the 20th anniversary of its first intake of students. Join us to learn about and celebrate this achievement.

£5 entry / £3 concession (student, unemployed, etc.).

Sunday 9th June, 2 – 5pm.
