Sugai Ken (RVNG INTL/Japan) + Cucina Povera

The Flying Duck Presents:

Sugain Ken (RVNG INTL/Japan)

The music of SUGAI KEN will invite you into the world of neo-japonica, an initiative created in between traditions and contemporary sound technologies. Born and raised in the rich, green suburbs of the Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan, his enveloping, avant-garde music doesn’t slip easily into the country’s pastoral tradition but feels rooted there all the same. Strange electro-acoustic sounds loom from ambient field recordings, offset by shimmering synth-work. It’s a style that hums with the vibrancy of people and tradition, deftly straddling the temporal gap between past and present, myth and reality.

Cucina Povera (Night School/Finalnd)

Cucina Povera is a Fenno-karelian producer (Maria Rossi) with feet firmly in Glasgow, mind aloft in the imaginary and heart ambling around Europe. Named after a style of southern Italian traditional cooking associated with precarity and making-do – it’s philosophy of simplicity and stoicism applies perfectly to the spare but beautiful music Rossi experiments with. Anchored by the hymnal dexterity of Rossi’s voice, her compositions weave her voice, bare synth lines and field recordings into circling mantra-esque refrains, forming an airy, reflective music that ravels and unravels over time.
