Loud, angry, nihilistic; Gout is the doom-inducing metal project from members of Glasgow bands Lucia & The Best Boys and The Ninth Wave. A far cry from these projects, however, Gout distills the intensity of hardcore with the slow crush of sludge forebears. Lyrically, vocalist Ally Scott reflects on some of the most uncomfortable aspects of self, evoking visceral imagery of hopelessness and dread. Gout’s debut EP, »Born Rotting« is not a gentle introduction. Across four songs recorded live in Glasgow the band – like its eponym – is largely unrelenting. Lead single »Bed Sores« sets the tone, opening with 20 seconds of feedback wails and tortured shouts. Brief moments of respite appear here and there, yet are inevitably crushed under the hydraulic weight of the band’s blown out instrumentation and animalistic screams. We should all experience Gout.
